Fiji+v+Samoa+IRB+RWC+2011+Match+26+FZNW24csKitl

By Greg Mumm

In the lead up to the last World Cup, somewhere in the walls of Oxford University, an Australian was writing a thesis on Fijian rugby – what he coined ‘The Rugby Dream’.

Dan Guinness played for the Brumbies himself and having been infected by the excitement and purity of island rugby, spent 6 months in Fiji, living and breathing rugby with these proud athletes, this proud rugby nation.

What he and other writers talk about mirrors my experiences, as I was lucky enough to coach them in 2007 and 2010/11. They are stories of extreme sacrifice, spirituality and amazing song.

Now many will say that these attributes exist in many of the teams going to the World Cup and I am sure they do to some degree, but it is only when you understand the deep relationship between these characteristics, the athletes and Fiji’s people that you get a true understanding of how powerful it can be.

If Fiji gets this right, along with the talent they have on the park – it will be a significant factor in their ability to challenge the top three developed nations in their pool.

On the field they will bring what they have always bought – physical forwards who carry like backs, blistering speed and agility out wide with an attitude to attack from anywhere. For mine, Leone Nakarawa will be the standout loose lock in the tournament and rival the great running game of Ifereimi Rawanqa. Also, given enough opportunity, there is every chance that Verenki Goneva will be close to one of the best backs.

This is an advantage that they have always had, but there ability to bring it in to the game has varied. What sets this side apart from their team at the last World Cup is its experience in key positions – the front row, the backrow and the halves.

Vice captain and hooker Sunia Koto is playing in his third World Cup and will bring stability to the scrum and lineout leadership. This along with Netani Talei and Akapusi Qera in the backrow will ensure Fiji is at least competitive at both set piece and breakdown.

In the backs, the halves include a vastly matured Josh Matavesi and the Bath bound Nikola Matawalu with good depth behind them. This offers a great benefit in terms of both running threats and distribution that could unleash their outside backs, a thought that scares even the best defences.

However, other teams have world-class players, and coaches will have ways of nullifying these threats or pushing their pressure points, so what is the elusive energy of Fiji that seems to captivate audiences and make oppositions pay attention?

Simply put, it is the Heart.

I say this deliberately, because it is not ‘their hearts’, the hearts of the individual players, but the shared heart of the every Fijian who has been part of this dream.

The Rugby Dream that Dan Guinness spoke of is a story of sacrifice that involves not just the individual or that person’s family, it is the sacrifice of a village, a community, a country.

Nemani Nadolo tweeted last week of the joy and pride he felt as a young Fijian reached out on their departure and gave him two dollars, ‘to help your pocket money for the World Cup’.

This is how the Rugby Dream works, whether you’re a player like Nemani, a village team or an individual abroad, the community holds them up physically, mentally and financially, their warriors to represent them throughout the world.

For this support, many of the talented athletes make huge sacrifices. They live and study abroad, play their sport in all corners of the globe for an opportunity, and when they can, they send money back to those who helped them.

When they reach the professional leagues in France or England, many take large pay cuts to return home and represent their country – their sacrifice met by those who welcome them home with gifts of food from the village, the church or community. On all fronts the sacrifice is shared for the individual and for Fiji.

This generosity is born of and extends to the spirit. Religious faith is a strong unifying factor within the teams and sermons about David v Goliath are commonplace. Beneath this lies also a deep connection to the ‘Vanua’ – the land, people and custom.

When combined, the communal sacrifice and the powerful synergies of religious and cultural spirituality provide an inspiration that is difficult to match.

On top of these is the glue that binds them together, so often heard in change rooms and fields around the world, their amazing song. These teams within the team sing perfect harmonies that ripple goose bumps down the arms of anyone lucky enough to be in ears distance.

And so it is, when Fiji faces these giants in the pool of death, that sacrifice, spirit and song will unify them, their secret weapon against uncertainty. Their faith, that regardless of the opposition, they can win. Regardless of the scoreboard, they can fight back and regardless of the obstacle, together united, Fiji can achieve anything.

And so despite the skill or the budget of their opponents, the biggest threat to Pool A sits just millimetres beneath the palm tree crest on the players jerseys.

There beats the heart of a nation, pounding in rhythm, united by The Rugby Dream.

Immoral

You and your right hand man, may be flush with money and sitting pretty. but there is no honour in cheating the aged, which is what you have done.

That you both know you cheated and broke basic laws is made clear by your implementing Degree 51, which stops the aged challenging your actions in a court of law.

Are you really proud of this achievement Frank ???… The aged deprived while you and your lawmaker grow FAT.

“The Hon. Prime [Minister] must be mindful of the fact that the support he shares from the RFMF has been based on the belief that he will also listen to us. The fact that he ignores all advice in favour of the Attorney General has led many in the institution to belief that there is something more going on than meets the eye.

Hon. Prime [Minister] is fully aware on the 130 pages report compiled by RFMF on the Attorney General corrupt practices which was ignored and led Brid. General Driti indictment. This follows norm of the current Commanders voice of reason with the resignation of Hon. Pio Tikoduadua. The senior command stands with the Hon. Prime Minister but when the Hon. PM ignores all advice in favour of Attorney General and keeps replacing senior officers, there will come a time when you sir, will find very less loyal followers in the RFMF.

While you sir, have had a vision of equal citizenry and equality for all, these incidents and the Attorney General promotion of Muslim friends and buddies and fiddling with traditional ownership has been causing much tension with general indigenous population.  Hon. PM must be mindful of the fact and long term situation because in case something happens to you sir, we fear that innocent people will be greatly victimised because of the Attorney General racial personal hatred vendetta.”

FijiRemember when this picture was taken Frank ? it was a time of promise, a time when you had the full support of all your fellow officers.

That was before you destroyed a number of their careers because they told you the TRUTH. They did not trust your Attorney General and his vindictive nature, but at that time they did trust you…. Which proved to be their downfall.

Look around Frank, your most favoured Minister has manipulated you so that you have systematically destroyed the strongest links you had in the chain that was your strength, you are acting like a man who has been bought and paid for, will this be your legacy Frank, is this the legacy you really wanted.

You have been painted into a corner by the very person you trusted, his downfall is like everything else, inevitable, the only question is when?. Corruption should never be King, it is not too late Frank, stop having clean sweeps at the camp, take your broom where it is really needed.

To level the media playing field
Professor Wadan Narsey
(edited version in The Fiji Times, 11 July 2015)

At yesterday’s parliamentary sitting, the Leader of the National Federation Party (Professor Biman Prasad) moved a motion that any fair-minded member of the public would have thought was completely reasonable and should have been supported by both sides of the house, just as several government bills were, on the previous day.

The motion read: “That Parliament agrees that the Minister for Communication through Cabinet immediately review the decision of exclusivity in terms of advertising in one newspaper in conformity to Sections 17, 25, 26 & 32 of the Constitution”.

The motion essentially asked the Government to treat The Fiji Times on the same level playing field as it did the Fiji Sun by placing its advertisements equally in both newspapers.

During the debate, it was admitted by the Fiji Government that in recent years, the Fiji Government had made a decision (documented) to place all its advertisements in the Fiji Sun, and discourage any in TheFiji Times.

As a rough guess, this government bias annually directs more than $5 million to the Fiji Sun, even taking into account the few advertisements placed with the Fiji Times in the last few weeks.

The facts about the newspaper media are that: the Fiji Times and the Fiji Sun are both privately owned; the Fiji Times has as high a circulation if not more, than the Fiji Sun; most readers, and especially the poorer people, cannot and do not buy both newspapers.

STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER ON THE FLAG

6/30/2015

I am delighted by the high level of engagement we are now getting from the Fijian people about a new national flag. After a relatively slow start, the national debate on the new designs for the new flag is now in full swing.

We are getting an unprecedented number of responses via our national flag website, through email correspondence and talkback radio. In addition, national flag feedback teams have already returned from Kadavu and certain parts of Lau, are currently in Rotuma and Lomaiviti and will soon be visiting the Yasawas, Mamanucas, Vanua Levu and Taveuni.

The response these teams have been receiving from the Fijian people has been very positive. And the Government recognises that they want more time to consider what form the new flag should take and are seeking more choices than are being offered by the existing 23 designs.

While we had originally set a deadline of today for the first phase of the flag selection process to be completed, the Government has decided to extend the period of consultation. More choices are going to be offered over the next few weeks and months. And the closing date for design consultations will now be 31 December 2015. Cabinet and then Parliament will consider the new flag design when it convenes in 2016.

By extending the deadline, there is now ample opportunity for Fijians of all ages and backgrounds to further contribute and consider what symbols most appropriately represent our wonderful nation. It has taken some time – in the Fijian way – for many people to become fully engaged and I very much welcome the current lively debate on the flag designs.

We will soon be announcing precise details of the revised timetable for consultations. And I appeal to all Fijians who have yet to do so to become involved in the process in a spirit of cooperation, collaboration, goodwill and nationhood.

I appeal to every Fijian to join our quest for a flag that represents who we are today, rather than our past, and that we can fly proudly into the future as we fulfil our vision to become a modern nation state.
