Pensioners Hilarious Letter To Her Bank

13 Tuesday Sep 2011

Many years ago Australian Business Week magazine front page asked “Why are the Bankers Bastards ?”, a year later to the day the same publication had “Why are the Bankers Still Bastards?” , having recently had to pay the latest bank levies at the Supermarket checkout for using a debit/credit card I have come to the conclusion that Business Week should have found space for the word GREEDY.

Enjoy the following story which is about a 98 year old woman from the UK who apparently wrote this to her bank after being hit with a bank charge for bouncing a cheque.
The story goes the bank manager found it amusing enough and sent it to The Times who published it.
True or not, it’s still pretty funny.

Greybeard.

Dear Sir,
I am writing to thank you for bouncing my cheque with which I endeavored to pay my plumber last month. By my calculations, three nanoseconds must have elapsed between his presenting the cheque and the arrival in my account of the funds needed to honour it. I refer, of course, to the automatic monthly deposit of my Pension, an arrangement, which, I admit, has been in place for only thirty eight years. You are to be commended for seizing that brief window of opportunity, and also for debiting my account £30 by way of penalty for the inconvenience caused to your bank.
My thankfulness springs from the manner in which this incident has caused me to rethink my errant financial ways. I noticed that whereas I personally attend to your telephone calls and letters, when I try to contact you, I am confronted by the impersonal, overcharging, pre-recorded, faceless entity which your bank has become. From now on, I, like you, choose only to deal with a flesh-and-blood person.

My mortgage and loan payments will therefore and hereafter no longer be automatic, but will arrive at your bank by cheque, addressed personally and confidentially to an employee at your bank whom you must nominate. Be aware that it is an offence under the Postal Act for any other person to open such an envelope. Please find attached an Application Contact Status which I require your chosen employee to complete. I am sorry it runs to eight pages, but in order that I know as much about him or her as your bank knows about me, there is no alternative. Please note that all copies of his or her medical history must be countersigned by a Solicitor, and the mandatory details of his/her financial situation (income, debts, assets and liabilities) must be accompanied by documented proof.
In due course, I will issue your employee with PIN number which he/she must quote in dealings with me. I regret that it cannot be shorter than 28 digits but, again, I have modelled it on the number of button presses required of me to access my account balance on yourphone bank service. As they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Let me level the playing field even further. When you call me, press buttons as follows:
1. To make an appointment to see me.

2. To query a missing payment.
3. To transfer the call to my living room in case I am there.
4. To transfer the call to my bedroom in case I am sleeping.
5. To transfer the call to my toilet in case I am attending to nature.
6. To transfer the call to my mobile phone if I am not at home.
7. To leave a message on my computer (a password to access my computer is required. (A password will be communicated to you at a later date to the Authorized Contact.)
8. To return to the main menu and to listen to options 1 through to 8.
9. To make a general complaint or inquiry, the contact will then be put on hold, pending the attention of my automated answering service. While this may, on occasion, involve a lengthy wait, uplifting music will play for the duration of the call.

Regrettably, but again following your example, I must also levy an establishment fee to cover the setting up of this new arrangement.
May I wish you a happy, if ever so slightly less prosperous, New Year.

Your Humble Client

Greypower found this appropriate link on National Union of Fairies and others which we think Greypower supporters and pensioners will enjoy, given the climate in Fiji for putting in place all sorts of novel ideas; for example a totally new definition of human rights unforeseen by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which we seem to be re-writing in Fiji in relation to the vulnerable people like older persons and the working class of Fiji.

We are pleased to suggest the following link purely for entertainment. The site, among other things  promotes the merits of ruthenium boro-bismuth thiohydride (RuBBiSH). a commodity that administrators and public sector executives may be familiar with.  The internal/extended links provide more serious insights and are well worth a click or two.

Fiji accused of planning politically motivated pension cuts

07 Wednesday Sep 2011

The Fiji government and the country’s only pension fund are being accused of deliberately targeting selected pensioners for pension reductions.

The lawyer representing the pensioners says newspaper advertisements placed by the pension fund show the pension cuts are politically motivated. The allegations come after months of controversy over plans by the military-backed government and the National Provident Fund to put pensions on a sound economic footing.

Presenter: Jemima Garrett ABC Australia Pacific Beat
Speaker: Dr Shaista Shameem, principal of the Suva-based law firm ShameemLaw

GARRETT: The Fiji National Provident Fund is in trouble. Even without recent failed investments which saw asset writedowns of 160 million Australian dollars it has a big problem with unfunded pension liabilities.

The Fiji government and the pension fund management are determined to do something about it.

But their plans are being challenged in the High Court by 75-year-old pensioner David Burness, who stands to lose up to 64 per cent of his pension. Mr Burness wants to see a full independent inquiry into the problem before any pension cuts are implemented. Over the past four weekends the Provident Fund has been setting out its position in newspaper advertisements.

Mr Burnesses lawyer, Shaista Shameem, is concerned the pensioners case is being undermined by government censorship and she says the Provident Fund is going too far in making comments on issues that are before the courts.

Proposed Law in China Would Punish Grown Children Who Demand Money from Their Parents

“The Civil Affairs Ministry is not the only government agency rushing to the defense of older people. Last week, the eastern province of Jiangsu passed an ordinance forbidding adult children from forcing their parents to give them money or goods, according to The Yangzi Evening News.”[Source: Sharon Lafraniere, New York Times, January 29, 2011]

China terms adult children who lean too heavily on their parents ‘kenlao zu’ — literally, people who nibble on their elders. The Chinese Research Center on Aging, a government-financed research center under the Civil Affairs Ministry, estimates that 3 in 10 adult Chinese remain partly or totally financially dependent on their parents.

Like the proposed national amendment, the provincial ordinance encourages adult children to see their parents regularly. What constitutes regular — as opposed to occasional or infrequent — is unclear. So is how such a requirement could be enforced. Mr. Wu, the Civil Affairs Ministry official, said in his interview with The Legal Evening News that lawsuits accusing children of emotional neglect of their parents ‘would be different from normal lawsuits. Because the amendment tries to govern social behavior, he said, ‘some details cannot be set forth very clearly.’ He suggested some lawsuits might end in supervision or mediation.

The amendment also addresses the need for more facilities, community care and in-home services for the older people, as well as the need for more social benefits, like free routine medical checkups. A spokesman for the ministry said he could not comment on the proposed amendment because it had not yet become law.

Grey Power commentary:
Fiji seems to be getting closer to China in terms of economic and trade ties. The Government and FNPF can also take a leaf out of China’s book in relation to its treatment of the elderly.

What is apparent throughout these cables is the callous disregard for the plight of ordinary Fijian people as the US, Australia and New Zealand all manoeuvre to protect their economic and strategic interests in the South Pacific against rival China

Sadly, as we all know, thanks to the extensive losses of our funds made by FNPF management and the potential manipulations of the law by the government to accommodate the demands of the FNPF Board and management, more Fiji pensioners will be thrust into poverty in the very near future.

As opposed to this, the following URL leads to a number of Links that show examples of what can be done by an administration that cares for its senior citizens.

Retiring late: Jacqueline’s story

02 Friday Sep 2011

Jacqueline joined her company’s defined contribution plan when she was 30. By age 65, her pension savings had grown to about $500,000. If she put that money in a retirement income fund the year she turned 65, and her money there grew 6% a year, her pension would equal about $3,300 a month, before taxes. That would be a yearly income of $39,600 until her 90th birthday.

But Jacqueline doesn’t want to retire until age 69. What will happen to her pension if she waits four extra years to retire? Under the plan rules, the company doesn’t have to pay anything more into her pension after age 65. But her savings have an extra four years to grow before she starts to spend them.

The result: If her savings grow 6% a year between ages 65 and 69, Jacqueline’s pension account will grow to $631,238 (or $4,224 per month), before taxes. That’s more than a 20% increase in just four years – almost $1,000 more every month.

Jacqueline’s Monthly Pension Payment

Grey Power Commentary

Grey Power believes no one should retire unless they want to. It may be more lucrative not to.

Just because we can take our pensions at 55 does not mean you have to retire at 55. You can negotiate a contract with your employer which states another retirement age.  The public service retirement age in Fiji is discriminatory according to international human rights law principles because it does not fulfill a justified public purpose.

For those of you who have a little time to spare, the following link to the Strategic Development Plan 2007-2011 may prove interesting, particularly Chapter 1.2.2, Prosperity for all, given the Governments apparent support for the extreme measures against current pensioners.

Greying population gives us a golden opportunity

EVERY day the world’s population becomes greyer and does so more rapidly than the previous day. About four decades from now, seniors on every continent will exceed the number of young, an event that has no parallel in the history of humanity and has the potential to cause an economic revolution unless all nations take steps immediately to take advantage of the changes.

Nuns sue Boston Archdiocese over retirement funds

Grey Power comment

Clearly Trustees all over the world are being sued for mismanagement of pension funds and failure to account;  the Catholic Church is no exception.

This story should be a lesson to the FNPF ‘Board’ which is not appointed according to section 3  of the FNPF Act, as David Burness has already informed the Board members and the Minister of Finance by letter dated 25th July 2011.

Can the FNPF Board make decisions to reduce the beneficiaries’ pensions if the members of the Board have not been properly appointed? This is one of the questions that the Burness case has asked the Court to determine.
